The IBM Magstar 3495 Tape Library automates the retrieval, mounting and demounting, and storage of tape cartridges. The 3495 is managed by DFSMS/MVS in an MVS environment. The 3490 Library Attachment Facility connects the 3490 Magnetic Tape Subsystem to the Magstar 3495 Tape Library. All models must have at least one A-unit and one B-unit attached. Each A-unit supports up to four B-units. The ESCON attachment of the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem to ES/3090 and ES/9000 systems, and S/390 Parallel Transaction and Enterprise servers is also supported on the 3495 Tape Library Models L20, L30, L40, and L50 through the 3590 Model A14 Frame. The 3590 Model A14 contains four Magstar 3590 Model B1A tape drives and one 3590 Model A00 Controller. This support gives you the capability to automate, and migration to, the highest capacity and highest performance tape drive that IBM has available. The 3495 Model B16 Virtual Tape Server is a cost/performance solution to provide ESCON attached ES/3090, ES/9000, and S/390 systems a hierarchical storage management system that exploits the capacity and performance of attached Magstar 3590 Tape Drives.
Through the use of both virtual and real cartridge capacity, the Magstar 3495 Tape Library provides a very large data storage capacity for new and existing customers.

The IBM Magstar 3495 B16 Virtual Tape Server, an integration of IBM advanced technologies, provides a hierarchical storage management system using IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Drives, IBM attached fault-tolerant RAID Disk Storage, a RISC-based controller, and IBM's award-winning Magstar 3495 Tape Library to deliver a new class of storage device to the traditional storage products hierarchy. Through exploitation of the tape and disk resources, this new class of device reduces the floor space required to store tape volumes, reduces tape operating costs, and reduces the cost of tape processing to provide a rapid investment payback. By stacking multiple logical volumes onto a single High Performance 3590 Cartridge Tape, a 3495 tape library can now be configured based on storage capacity rather than the number of cartridge storage slots. The Virtual Tape Server can be attached to the 3495 Models L20, L30, L40, and L50.

The Magstar 3495 Tape Library has an actual capacity of 5,660 to 6,440 cartridges allowing for a theoretical capacity of 13 to 194 terabytes of data. The maximum cartridge storage capacity decreases as additional Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystems or 3490 control units and tape units are added to the configuration. The maximum capacity is achieved using all 3590 tape cartridges with a 3-to-1 compaction ratio, and all cartridges filled to capacity. Because of user variations, this capacity may or may not be achieved. If one 3490 A-unit is attached, then up to four 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. If two 3490 A-units are attached, then up to two 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. A 3590 Model A14 with four Magstar 3590 Model B1A Tape Drives and one Model A00 Controller may be installed in place of any 3490 unit.
(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of April 24, 1998)
The Magstar 3495 Tape Library has an actual capacity of 8,480 to 10,590 cartridges allowing for a theoretical capacity of 20 to 318 terabytes of data. If one 3490 A-unit is attached, then up to four(4) 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. If two 3490 A-units are attached, then up to eight 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. If three 3490 A-units are attached, then up to six 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. A 3590 Model A14 with four Magstar 3590 Model B1A Tape Drives and one Model A00 Controller may be installed in place of any 3490 unit up to a maximum of 32 Magstar 3590 Tape Drives.
(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of April 24, 1998)
The Magstar 3495 Tape Library has an actual capacity of 11,300 to 14,750 cartridges allowing for a theoretical capacity of 27 to 443 terabytes of data. If two 3490 A-units are attached, then up to eight 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. If three 3490 A-units are attached, then up to twelve 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. If four 3490 A-units are attached, then up to thirteen 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library.
The Magstar 3495 Tape Library has an actual capacity of 14,120 to 18,910 cartridges allowing for a theoretical capacity of 34 to 568 terabytes of data. Up to four 3490 A-units and up to sixteen 3490 B04/B40 units will attach to the library. A 3590 Model A14 with four Magstar 3590 Model B1A Tape Drives and one Model A00 Controller may be installed in place of any 3490 unit up to a maximum of 32 Magstar 3590 Tape Drives.

The IBM 3495 Tape Library Model M10 is a stand-alone library manager for use
with nonautomated IBM 3490 and 3490E Magnetic Tape Subsystem Models A and B. A
single IBM 3495 Tape Library Model M10 can manage as many as 100,000 magnetic
tape cartridges. The IBM 3495 Tape Library Model M10 brings the Data Facility
Storage Management Subsystem/MVS (DFSMS/MVS) advantages previously announced for
the 3495 Automated Tape Library environment to the nonautomated environment.
This can be used to complement the automated environment, provide (DFSMS/MVS)
control and experience when planning a migration to an automated environment, or
provide benefits of tape DFSMS/MVS to those environments where automation is not
justified. The Model M10 is designed to provide an architectural base for the
inclusion of future IBM improvements and third party supplied optional features
such as large message display panels or optical scanners into the management of
tape operator tasks. The optical scanners provide additional ease for inputting
volume serial number and location information to the IBM 3495 Tape Library Model
M10.
The 3495 Model B16 Virtual Tape Server provides a single integrated
hierarchical storage management system to meet the following needs:
